To be an effective supervisor, practitioners must develop separate skills from those required for the practice of counselling/psychotherapy. Simply because one is a skilled counsellor/psychotherapist does not necessarily mean one will be an effective supervisor. Because supervisors accept the ethical and legal responsibility for the work of the supervisee with clients, an additional burden of responsibility is placed on the counsellor/psychotherapist serving in a supervisor role. One barrier for practitioners who want to become effective supervisors is the lack of material available to train supervisors outside of academic settings. This page is designed to provide resources to partially fill that gap.

Education 5850 Counselling Supervision: Theory and Practice

National Clinical Supervision Competency Framework

The framework establishes a collective understanding of what constitutes qualified and competent clinical supervision in Canada. The framework establishes a foundation for greater accountability and contributes to the sustainability of clinical supervision as a specialty area of practice under the umbrella of the counselling and psychotherapy profession. Clinical supervisors at all stages of development and levels of experience are invited to engage in the self-assessment as an avenue for self-reflection and professional growth plan development. We hope that this self-assessment process will inform and enhance your clinical supervision experiences.
