Update on the process of regulation

On March 1, 2024 the Alberta government announced that it will be regulating Alberta counsellors under the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP).

Provincial Announcement: Moving forward with Regulation of Alberta Counsellors

CCPA supports the work being done by The Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA) as they work to support the provincial government and the CAP through this time of transition.

ACTA was established because of legislation and was to be the precursor to the College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (CCTA). ACTA was to become the CCTA once proclaimed. Due to the recent announcement, the changes that will occur to ACTA are to be determined.

On December 11, 2018, Bill 30, The Mental Health Services Protection Act, was passed unanimously in the Alberta Legislature. As a result, the professions of Counselling Therapy, Addictions Counselling and Child and Youth Care Counselling will soon be officially included in the Health Professions Act (HPA). The Alberta Government has not yet set a proclamation date for the CCTA.
