On December 20, 2013, the PEI Health Ministry indicated that the RHPA  (Regulated Health Professions Act), Bill 42 was in effect.

Under this new legislation, unregulated health professions can apply to become regulated.

The Prince Edward Island Counselling Association (PEICA) applied and was asked to respond to a series of questions.

PEICA Committee members met on Feb 23, 2017 with Health and Wellness Deputy Minister Critchley and Legislative Specialist, Nichola Hewitt.

It was established that the Counselling profession is entitled to pursue title protection of Registered Counselling Therapist ( RCT) under the RHPA

A Letter of intent as well as application was sent to the Minister Robert Henderson March 23, 2017 to pursue title protection and be a regulated profession.

The government Legislative Specialists indicated that it will be approximately 2 years before they will be able to start working on the PEICA file as there are 11 other professions currently in line.
