C&P Month 2025

A JOURNEY THROUGH THERAPY

Counselling and Psychotherapy Month is an initiative designed to honour the essential role of counselling therapists and psychotherapists across Canada play in fostering community wellbeing. This month-long event invites you to celebrate, connect, and reflect on all that it means to be a mental health professional in Canada.

This year, in celebration of the CCPA’s 60th anniversary, our theme is A Journey Through Therapy—exploring the past, present, and future of counselling and psychotherapy. We’ll highlight key milestones in the field, the evolution of therapeutic approaches, and the path forward toward a more accessible and inclusive mental health landscape.

Throughout April, we’ll host free workshops, offer valuable resources, and share inspiring content to support and celebrate our members. Join us on this journey and check out what we have in store below!

KEY MESSAGES

Then & Now

Therapy has transformed over the decades, evolving from stigma and limited access to a profession that embraces inclusivity, science, and holistic care. As we reflect on the past 60 years, we celebrate the progress that has shaped modern counselling and psychotherapy while recognizing the work still needed to ensure accessible, high-quality care.

Milestones in Mental Health

From early advocacy efforts to groundbreaking policy changes, key milestones have shaped the evolution of mental health care in Canada. We reflect on the progress made, the challenges overcome, and the defining moments that have expanded access, reduced stigma, and strengthened the role of counselling and psychotherapy in our communities.

The Future of Therapy

Legislative changes, research breakthroughs, and cultural shifts have defined the landscape of mental health care. From the recognition of counselling and psychotherapy as essential professions to key advocacy wins, we highlight the pivotal moments that have improved access, understanding, and the role of therapy in Canadian society.

Therapy as Essential Mental Health Care

Mental health care is health care. Yet, many Canadians still face financial and systemic barriers to accessing therapy. We continue to advocate for national regulation, tax-free therapy, and policies that recognize counselling and psychotherapy as fundamental components of well-being. Everyone deserves access to professional mental health support.

A Growing Community

As the demand for mental health care has increased, the counselling and psychotherapy community has expanded to meet the needs of Canadians. Over the past 60 years, CCPA has grown into a strong network of professionals committed to connection, advocacy, and shared learning. Through collaboration and community-building, we continue to support one another and strengthen the future of therapy in Canada.

Acknowledging Historical Harms & a Path Towards Reconcilliation

While we celebrate 60 years of CCPA, we acknowledge the valuable contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples to our field, and the lands we live and work on. We also recognize that counselling and psychotherapy have not always been spaces of healing for all, and we remain committed to justice and accountability.
