Connection: Human Care in the Age of Technology

Each April, Counselling & Psychotherapy Month recognizes the vital role counsellors and psychotherapists play in supporting mental health and well-being across Canada. It is also a time to bring the profession together through learning, dialogue, and shared reflection.

This year’s theme explores how digital innovation is transforming the landscape of care—while reaffirming the importance of empathy, presence, and the therapeutic relationship.

Join us throughout the month to explore timely topics, connect with peers, access resources, and celebrate the impact of the profession.

Key Messages

Human connection remains at the heart of mental health care.

Technology can support access and innovation, but healing is built through real human understanding, presence, and trust.

Technology should enhance care — not replace it.

Digital tools and AI can improve efficiency, access, and insight, but they cannot replace the relational depth of counselling and psychotherapy.

In a digitally connected world, many people feel more isolated than ever.

Counselling and psychotherapy provide meaningful, human-centered connection in a time of increasing disconnection.

Equitable access to care must remain a priority in the digital age.

While technology can reduce barriers to mental health services, the digital divide continues to limit access for many individuals and communities. Counselling and psychotherapy professionals advocate for inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive care for all.

Strong cybersecurity, clear laws, and ethical practice are essential in digital mental health care.

As technology becomes more integrated into counselling and psychotherapy, protecting privacy, confidentiality, and client safety must remain central to professional standards and public trust.
