Luke ramps up access. The story behind StopGap.

stop-gap-group“I left my life as I knew it,” Luke Anderson explained to Career Buzz listeners (Feb. 24, 2016) about the day of his mountain biking accident. “All of a sudden I was introduced to a world that’s not well suited to someone who uses a wheelchair.”

Luke’s frustration with the lack of accessibility led him to found Stopgap Foundation which builds ramps for single-step storefronts and raises awareness about barriers in our built environment. Why do we give more thought to what brand of jeans to buy than a career plan?

“Too many of the young and jobless have given more thought to what brand of jeans to buy than their career plan,” writes Neil Sandell in an article entitled Career education lacking in Canada  in the Atkinson Series on youth unemployment published in the Toronto Star.

It’s not just youth who suffer from lack of career clarification; adults too lack career clarity. We spend 100,000 hours in our careers, so why do we invest so little time – some estimates put it at less than 20 hours for the average Canadian – in focused career planning and exploration?

Sandell says that, for youth, the problem is a combination of unhelpful advice from parents, patchy career education, lack of career exploration experience, among other factors. You can hear more in my interview with Neil Sandell on Career Buzz.

From my perspective leading a busy career management social enterprise, CareerCycles, serving individual clients of all ages and stages, it’s a mess out there. Career management is arguably the most important 21st century skill, and yet the vast majority of Canadians don’t possess a high enough level of that skill, don’t realize they can learn it, and don’t know where to turn.

Work-Life Narratives: developing your career identify through your stories, and the value of career conversations

Career Buzz radio recently explored the value of career conversations. Professor Frans Meijers is a top researcher in the area of career guidance in the Netherlands. He shared with listeners all that’s wrong about career conversations with youth in school, and how to right it. But why doesn’t the education system work to help youth with this important task? “It doesn’t work because you only can build your [career] identity, you can only develop your heart on the basis of real life experience and schools don’t offer real life experiences.” This episode is really worth a listen.
