Sustainable, energy efficient, green, eco\/environmentally friendly.\u00a0 It seems that everywhere I turn someone (or some product) is using these words [have you noticed it too?].\u00a0 Businesses, municipalities, and schools all seem to have a green agenda and it made me wonder – just how environmentally friendly is online counselling?\u00a0 Am I doing my bit to save the planet?<\/p>\n

With that noble aim in mind I decided to conduct a green assessment of my online counselling practice [humming Kermit\u2019s theme song \u201cit\u2019s not easy being green\u201d].<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Green Transportation <\/strong><\/p>\n

I work at home so that\u2019s easy.\u00a0\u00a0 No driving, no gas, no emissions\u00a0 and hey, my clients don\u2019t drive either.\u00a0 Double bonus.\u00a0 I save the planet twice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Plus, Online counselling is kinda like an online retail store but without the shipping. Triple the green points!\u00a0<\/p>\n

And then there are the staff meetings and the staff parties \u2013 all online.\u00a0 Saves a lot of wear and tear on the environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Recycle<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paper, plastic, packaging, glass.\u00a0 Check !\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reduce<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, I don\u2019t go out for coffee [no disposable cups] or lunch [no packaging] so that\u2019s some reduction in waste.\u00a0 Hmmm, could do more in this department.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Become part of the ReUse Revolution<\/strong><\/p>\n

That covers most of my office furniture. On second thought \u2013 that covers ALL of my office furniture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Buy greener office supplies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or none at all.\u00a0 No paper forms to fill out, no need to photocopy or print out anything for clients, no pens, staples, paper clips, tape, etc.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conserve energy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hmm, double paned-thermal windows, insulation, and energy-efficient light bulbs.<\/p>\n

Remember to turn off lights and turn down the heat.<\/p>\n

Check !\u00a0<\/p>\n

Conserve Water <\/strong><\/p>\n

Fewer \u201cwork\u201d clothes [after all who sees me?] so less laundry and dry cleaning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Low flow taps and toilet [but then you probably didn\u2019t need to know either of these facts!]\u00a0<\/p>\n

Green home and office cleaning <\/strong><\/p>\n

Yup \u2013 got that one covered.\u00a0 I use ecologically friendly products to clean.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Renewable Energy alternatives<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thinking about putting a wind turbine in my backyard.<\/p>\n

Hmm, wonder what my neighbours would think?<\/p>\n

Wow \u2013 when I look at it like this I feel like an eco-warrior [putting on my superhero cloak].\u00a0 Online counselling is definitely\u2026.a shade of green.<\/p>\n

I might add it to my marketing strategy \u2013 \u201cDoing my bit for the environment one online counselling session at a time\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

[grinning and hoping this hasn\u2019t felt like a \u201cgreenwash\u201d].\u00a0<\/p>\n
