{"id":7188,"date":"2015-09-01T09:55:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T13:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/?p=7188"},"modified":"2015-09-01T09:55:00","modified_gmt":"2015-09-01T13:55:00","slug":"play-nice-with-mindlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/play-nice-with-mindlight\/","title":{"rendered":"Play Nice with \u2018Mindlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The name \u201cPlay Nice Institute\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> conjures up images of extremely polite children playing on a playground &#8211; taking turns on swings and slides, no whining or complaining or blaming. Everyone being, well, Nice.<\/p>\n<p>A lovely image but that\u2019s not what the Play Nice Institute (PNI) is all about. They are \u201can organization that focuses on the design and development of games that promote emotional resilience through skills acquired while children are immersed in games they love to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, PNI has created a neurofeedback video game called \u2018Mindlight\u201d. Aimed at children 8 \u2013 12 years of age, Mindlight is a video game designed to help children learn how to face and overcome anxiety and fear. The child wears an EEG headband. An electrode in the headband reads brainwaves &#8211; alpha, beta, and theta waves.\u00a0\u00a0 The game uses the child\u2019s mindset and brainwaves to advance the action in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Mindlight starts with Arty who arrives at grandma\u2019s house only to discover the house is covered in darkness. He has to rescue grandma. There are a number of obstacles he has to overcome, progressively scarier encounters, and puzzles he has to solve in order to save his grandmother. In the game Arty wears Teru, a magical hat that shines whenever the child playing the game feels relaxed. As soon as the child playing the game becomes anxious or fearful the game turns dark and they have to relax themselves in order to generate light again.<\/p>\n<p>As the PNI says, \u201cUsing the neurofeedback headset to play the game, the environment, threats, and puzzles all respond to how a player is allocating his\/her attention and, thus, how he\/she is feeling. Relaxation allows for a light bubble to shine on the surroundings and focused concentration unlocks hiding spaces and allows the player to solve attention bias modification puzzles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MindLight uses several evidence-based strategies through which children learn to manage and overcome anxiety symptoms.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relaxation and mindfulness techniques<\/li>\n<li>Exposure therapy<\/li>\n<li>Attention bias modification methods<\/li>\n<li>Neurofeedback mechanics using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gainplaystudio.com\/mindwave\"><strong>MindWave<\/strong><\/a> headset<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why did they develop a game like this? Researchers at the PNI and Queen\u2019s University point out that evidence-based treatments such as cognitive-behavioural therapy often leave \u201cchildren unmotivated and disengaged; children get little practice in using the skills they are taught, creating a large gap between their knowledge and their everyday behaviour.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> Not to mention potential waitlists for treatment and expense.<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind this therapeutic video game is that the gaming environment provides \u201cengaging contexts through which children practice skills (rather than memorize lessons)\u201d thus bridging the gap between knowledge and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The Play Nice Institute states, \u201cwe are\u00a0committed to empirically evaluating the effectiveness of our games through randomized controlled trials and diverse experimental studies\u201d. Queen\u2019s University is also involved in testing the effectiveness of Mindlight and you can find out more about their clinical trials in the website listed in the footnote.<\/p>\n<p>There are plans to extend this idea to other issues such as anti-bullying and depression. When asked about whether the video games will replace therapy the PNI says they see these games rather as adjunct tools for therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Fascinating!
