{"id":5621,"date":"2014-06-16T16:09:21","date_gmt":"2014-06-16T20:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=3638"},"modified":"2014-06-16T16:09:21","modified_gmt":"2014-06-16T20:09:21","slug":"sleepy-time-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/sleepy-time-apps\/","title":{"rendered":"Sleepy Time Apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe it\u2019s the longer days at this time of year.\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s getting close to the end of the school year.\u00a0 Or expectations at work have increased.\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s just the norm for our society these days.\u00a0 Everyone I talk to \u2013 colleagues and clients alike keep saying how tired they are.\u00a0\u00a0 If they aren\u2019t talking about it they are showing it!<\/p>\n<p>For some it seems to be an issue of having difficulty falling asleep.\u00a0 Too wired up or tense from the day\u2019s stressors.\u00a0\u00a0 For others it is an issue of interrupted sleep or being awoken too early.\u00a0\u00a0 We all know how important sleep is for our physical and mental well-being.\u00a0 What to do?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an app for everything it seems and sleep is no exception.\u00a0 I found over 2,000 apps related to improving sleep.\u00a0 That number may be indicative of just how many people are struggling with getting a decent night\u2019s rest.<\/p>\n<p>There are apps to help you determine your optimal sleeping patterns and that then help you set an alarm that is a \u201cnatural\u201d awakening.\u00a0 There are apps that are aimed at creating a relaxed state for you to drift into sleep naturally.\u00a0\u00a0 You have to pick those ones carefully.\u00a0 Some of my clients have commented they find certain voices to be \u201ccreepy\u201d or just plain annoying.\u00a0 Not exactly conducive to relaxing and falling asleep.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And let\u2019s not mention what happens when some people listen to sounds of waterfalls\u2026.or\u2026.rain\u2026.!<\/p>\n<p>One of the most popular sleep apps is Sleeptime.\u00a0 It serves both as an alarm clock and sleep cycle analysis.\u00a0 You put it on your bed or under your pillow and it monitors your sleep cycles and, apparently, wakes you up in a more natural way.\u00a0 The reviews are consistently positive and people say they feel much more rested when they use Sleeptime.<\/p>\n<p>Sleepbot is similar and equally popular.\u00a0 It has a \u201csmart alarm\u201d, motion and sound trackers and a sleep debt log.\u00a0 What I like about these is it gives my clients and I more information about their sleeping patterns in an easy-to-capture format.\u00a0\u00a0 Not that keeping a sleeping log is arduous but an app can make it easier.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s been helpful for clients to really have a close look at what happens when they sleep.<\/p>\n<p>In an article in Psychology Today,<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> sleep researcher Jordan Gaines Lewis questions whether an app such as these would have the precision needed to accurately assess a person\u2019s sleep cycle.\u00a0\u00a0 He wonders if the hype about these apps is due to the placebo effect.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course, it might also be the pretty graphs that you get every morning that shows your sleep patterns.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s precise or a placebo he thinks it\u2019s a positive thing that people are paying more attention to their sleep patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn M.
