{"id":5587,"date":"2014-04-18T08:00:04","date_gmt":"2014-04-18T12:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=3327"},"modified":"2014-04-18T08:00:04","modified_gmt":"2014-04-18T12:00:04","slug":"the-opportunity-to-fail-is-a-blessing-in-disguise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/the-opportunity-to-fail-is-a-blessing-in-disguise\/","title":{"rendered":"The Opportunity to Fail is a Blessing in Disguise"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>March 5, 2014<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Before<strong>\u00a0Paul Smith<\/strong>\u00a0got the job as\u00a0Executive Director of the\u00a0Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers, or CACEE, he volunteered, first as a regional director, then as board president. When I asked Paul (<a href=\"http:\/\/careercycles.com\/school-to-work-transition-with-cacees-paul-smith-and-nancy-moulday\">Career Buzz, March 5, 2014<\/a>) what advice he had for listeners about volunteering as a way to manage your career for the future, Paul said, \u201cDo it!\u201d He emphasized advantages of career-related volunteering including \u201copportunities for development, the people you meet, the satisfaction that will come from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opportunity to fail,\u201d is another benefit of volunteering that Paul believes people underestimate, especially because, \u201cit\u2019s not life and death.\u201d You learn from failure.\u00a0<strong>\u201cTo pick yourself up after you\u2019ve fallen and carry on with something is such as blessing in disguise.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Connecting this to the school-to-work transition Paul said, \u201cso many students are afraid to make that first jump in to a career because what if it\u2019s not the right one?\u201d He advised: \u201cDoing is better than not doing. Trying is better than watching. Fail faster!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the clues that apply to you?<\/strong>\u00a0Consider volunteering for an\u00a0association or organization relevant to your field, or to the field you want to get into. You may be able to take a page from Paul Smith\u2019s book. After meaningful volunteer stints, the top job opened up. \u201cWhen I heard the opportunity was there, I applied for it and I guess they thought well of my application.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<strong>Try this:<\/strong>\u00a0Find the relevant organizations and associations in your field. Don\u2019t know which ones? Google it! Then find out how to volunteer. Paul Smith emphasized the huge need that associations have for volunteers.
