{"id":5572,"date":"2014-02-03T09:57:30","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T14:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=3238"},"modified":"2014-02-03T09:57:30","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T14:57:30","slug":"me-my-selfie-and-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/me-my-selfie-and-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Me, My Selfie and I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Oxford Dictionary announced that \u201cselfie\u201d was their International Word of the year for 2013.\u00a0 In case you don\u2019t know \u2013 a selfie is \u201ca photograph one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website\u201d.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since that announcement I have been paying a whole lot more attention to the ever-increasing proliferation of these self-portraits.\u00a0 There are days when my Facebook feed is full of them. \u00a0Funny, silly, gorgeous, questionable or just plain odd.\u00a0 They show a moment in time &#8212; a moment that person has chosen to capture and share.\u00a0 Which prompts the question \u201cwhy\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>There has been a lot of discussion amongst my friends and colleagues about whether this rise in selfie portraiture indicates a rise in narcissism in our culture. \u00a0Most of them think it does.\u00a0\u00a0 Reading I have done as well leans toward the conclusion that selfies are a clear indicator our society is more self-absorbed than previously.\u00a0 On the other hand students tell me selfies are more about self-esteem and confidence than narcissism.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed to me it was worth further exploration.<\/p>\n<p>Pamela Rutledge, in a Psychology Today article, says \u201cPut aside your anxieties over rampant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/basics\/narcissism\">narcissism<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/basics\/morality\">moral<\/a> decline of the digital generation and exhale.\u201d <a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> She goes on to talk how selfies can be perceived to be \u201cself-indulgent\u201d or \u201cattention-seeking\u201d and why we, as a society might view them that way. \u00a0She also talks about how they can be used positively.\u00a0 She suggests selfies \u201ccan enable a brief adventure into a different aspect of self or a relaxation of normal constraints. \u00a0Needless to say, there are some unfortunate uses of selfies.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean the act of taking a selfie is a bad thing.\u201d\u00a0 In another article by Rutledge she lists ideas for taking healthy selfies. <a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mike Langlois (gamertherapist.com) also writes about selfies and how the counselling profession seems to view them \u201cas a \u201csymptom\u201d of the narcissism of the age\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0He suggests instead that \u201cPeople who take a selfie are not explaining themselves, <strong>they are acknowledging that they are worth being visible.<\/strong>\u201d <a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s an interesting idea.<\/p>\n<p>What really intrigued me are his suggestions on ways to use selfies in therapy.\u00a0 Here\u2019s some questions he proposes asking clients about their selfies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you thinking and feeling that day you took this?<\/p>\n<p>What do you hope this says about you?<\/p>\n<p>What do you hope this hides about you?<\/p>\n<p>Who have you shared this with?<\/p>\n<p>What was their response?<\/p>\n<p>What might this selfie tell us about who you are?<\/p>\n<p>What might this selfie tell us about who you wish to be?<\/p>\n<p>Where does that spark of belief that you are worth seeing reside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I can see how asking these types of questions and engaging clients in a discussion about selfies would open up a rich discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Langlois\u2019 conclusion?\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cWhat if we looked at the selfie as a form of play?&#8230;.We sometimes seem to privilege despair as somehow more meaningful and true than joy and celebration, but aren\u2019t both essential parts of the human condition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has a point!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dawn M.
