{"id":5561,"date":"2013-11-22T16:35:33","date_gmt":"2013-11-22T21:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=3142"},"modified":"2013-11-22T16:35:33","modified_gmt":"2013-11-22T21:35:33","slug":"small-steps-big-changes-mindshift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/small-steps-big-changes-mindshift\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Steps, Big Changes &#8211; MindShift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine you\u2019re a high school student who suffers from test anxiety.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that you don\u2019t study \u2013 it\u2019s just that your mind goes blank anytime you are in a test situation and you fail.\u00a0 And the more that happens the more anxious you feel.\u00a0 Each test is starting to feel like a mountain you don\u2019t want to climb.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot riding for you on the test you have today.\u00a0\u00a0 It feels as if your heart is going to come out of your chest it\u2019s beating so fast and you can feel yourself starting to panic.<\/p>\n<p>Now imagine you pull out your phone and open the MindShift app.\u00a0 There you find tips on calm breathing, reminders about helpful thoughts and you can review strategies to manage your anxiety before, during and after a test.<\/p>\n<p>Ahhh, that\u2019s better.\u00a0 Heartbeat and breathing slows.\u00a0 Thoughts stop racing.\u00a0 You are feeling more in charge and able to face the task at hand.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just one small example of how MindShift, a new app designed to help teens and young adults manage anxiety and reduce stress, can work.<\/p>\n<p>This evidence-based app was released in June of this year and was co-developed by Anxiety BC and BC Mental Health &amp; Addiction Services. \u00a0Teens and young adults were included in the design process and their feedback was invaluable.<\/p>\n<p>The app is easy to navigate and offers concrete practical support that can be personalized by the user.\u00a0\u00a0 MindShift is discreet in appearance and name so it won\u2019t be immediately obvious to anyone that you are using the app for anxiety management and you can password protect it if you wish.<\/p>\n<p>MindShift has several sections:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Anxiety 101<\/em> \u2013 a brief education section.<\/p>\n<p><em>My Situations<\/em> \u2013 you can choose situations you would like help with.\u00a0 MindShift includes strategies to deal with everyday anxiety and also offers specific strategies for dealing with the following seven areas:\u00a0 Worry, Panic, Conflict, Performance Anxiety, Test Anxiety, Perfectionism and Social Anxiety.\u00a0 As I understand it they hope to add more areas as time goes on. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Check Yourself\u2013 you can rate your anxiety levels and check off the symptoms you are experiencing and there\u2019s also space to write notes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thinking Right<\/em> \u2013 this is a list of helpful thoughts for dealing with specific situations or you can use the \u201crealistic thinking for everyday\u201d to shift self-talk to more balanced, fair, realistic thoughts. You can star your favourites so you can come back to them.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chill out tools<\/em> \u2013 offers relaxation exercises, visualizations, and mindfulness strategies<\/p>\n<p><em>Active steps <\/em>\u2013 action plans you can customize for each situation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Inspiration<\/em> \u2013 quotes on courage and facing fears with the space to add your own<\/p>\n<p><em>Quick Tips<\/em> \u2013 four quick strategies to deal with anxiety in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I like this phrase\u2026\u201dThink of <strong>MindShift<\/strong> as your portable coach helping you face challenging situations and take charge of your life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>You can download it here &#8211;
