Financial planners often ask what people want to do when they retire, and then the numbers are crunched. \u201cThey find themselves retired and executing a plan that was ephemeral,\u201d Heather said. \u201cThey need a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of a dream, people get bored. Heather cited RBC\u2019s retirement myths and realities poll that found 39% of retirees went back to work because they were bored. Why don\u2019t people plan for retirement? According to research Heather shared, it\u2019s because they\u2019ve always been told what to do \u2014 in their careers, in education \u2014 so planning for themselves is unfamiliar territory. Plus, there\u2019s virtually no conversation between husbands and wives. \u201cOne wanted to open a bed and breakfast and the other wanted to stay in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does this apply to you?<\/strong> If retirement is in sight for you, or for a parent or loved one, answer the question, What is the dream? \u201cThink about it in five year chunks,\u201d recommended Heather. And get help.
