According to the 2011 KidsHelpPhone survey on Cyberbullying,[1]<\/a> it \u201cremains a significant problem for many young people in Canada\u2026.\u201d.\u00a0 Cyberbullying may consist of threats, insults, and, as we have seen in a tragic case here in Canada, unwanted photos\/videos posted on social networking sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a whole other side to this I wasn\u2019t aware of until I started doing research on this in the past few weeks.\u00a0 Self-cyberbullying or, as researcher Danah Boyd calls it, \u201cdigital self-harm\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0In her 2010 article, she points out, \u201c\u2026there are teens out there who are self-harassing by \u201canonymously\u201d writing mean questions to themselves and then publicly answering them.\u201d<\/strong>[2]<\/a><\/p>\n

More recently there have been a couple of high profile cases in the USA and the UK where the threats, nasty comments and harassment have been traced to the victim\u2019s own account or IP address.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Englander, Director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center, conducted some research with first year university students on this topic.\u00a0 She found, \u201c9% of the subjects told us that they had falsely posted a cruel remark \u201cagainst\u201d themselves, or cyberbullied themselves, during high school\u2026.about half of these \u201cdigital self-harmers\u201d had done this only once or very infrequently; the other half\u00a0 reported that they had cyberbullied themselves more regularly or had one, ongoing episode which lasted at least several months\u201d[3]<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a huge percentage though as Boyd says, \u201cthe fact that it exists at all should be a warning to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which leads me to ask\u2013 what lies behind this type of behavior?\u00a0 In Boyd\u2019s article she surmised three possible explanations:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cry for help<\/p>\n

They want to look cool\u00a0<\/p>\n

They\u2019re trying to trigger compliments<\/p>\n

Knowing youth as I do I can see how these would be potential explanations.\u00a0 Not necessarily rational or logical but still explanations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Englander\u2019s students were \u201cmost likely to say they actually did this in an attempt to gain the attention of a peer\u2026Girls were more likely than boys to say that their motivation was \u201cproving I could take it,\u201d encouraging others \u201cto worry about me,\u201d or to \u201cget adult attention.\u201d Boys were more likely to say that they did this because they were mad, as a way to start a fight\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Hmmm.\u00a0 Very interesting explanations as well.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s clear that more research needs to be done in this area.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether someone\u2019s experience of cyberbullying is \u201creal\u201d or self-directed the key is to, as Englander says, \u201cfocus on the targets of online abuse. When a student claims to be a victim of cyberbullying, they need our support and attention. That need should be front and center, regardless of whether the cyberbullying is real or manufactured. In fact, students who self-cyberbully may be among those who need our attention most of all.\u201d<\/p>\n
