I have been spending a lot of time lately with tweens and teens learning about how they are using all sorts of social media.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard stories of connection and of cyberbullying.\u00a0 Stories about rumours and damage to reputations.\u00a0 \u00a0I have also witnessed how quickly something on social media can escalate into a real-life crisis. \u00a0<\/p>\n

One such crisis in recent weeks originated via Snapchat.\u00a0 Once the crisis was dealt with I decided to research this \u2018new to me\u2019 app.\u00a0\u00a0 I was surprised at how popular it is.\u00a0\u00a0 As of September 21st<\/sup> Snapchat users were sending 350 million photos daily.<\/p>\n

What is it? A mobile app for \u201creal-time picture chatting\u201d. \u00a0Theoretically, Snapchat allows users to send a photo that then disappears after 1 -10 seconds.\u00a0 The creators of this app refer to it as \u201ca new way to share moments with friends. Snap an ugly selfie (a self-portrait) or a video, add a caption, and send it to a friend (or maybe a few). They’ll receive it, laugh, and then the snap disappears\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Sounds like a reasonable, fun idea. Yet it raises some red flags for me.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

First, do the photos really \u201cdisappear\u201d?\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Snapchat, \u201cin most cases once the recipient has viewed a message, it is automatically deleted from Snapchat\u2019s servers and cannot be retrieved by anyone, for any reason\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hmm.\u00a0 Sounds a bit sketchy to me.\u00a0 I know 10 seconds isn\u2019t long but I suspect one would be able to take a screenshot in that time frame. \u00a0<\/p>\n

In their Parent Guide, ConnectSafely.org says\u00a0 \u201cSnapchat lets you know when your message has been opened and\u2014usually\u2014if it has been captured and saved by the recipient. We say \u201cusually\u201d because it doesn\u2019t work 100% of the time and there are workarounds, including some \u201chacks\u201d and the ability to take a picture of the screen with a camera, including a friend\u2019s cell phone camera.\u201d[1]<\/a><\/p>\n

Second, what is being sent? \u00a0A question to which I do not have the answer. \u00a0I have heard stories from youth about how it has been used for harassment. Though the most common concern raised in several articles I read is the potential for this app to be used for \u2018sexting\u2019. \u00a0Which can be a scary prospect for parents and for others who care about young people and want them to be safe.<\/p>\n

For those who are concerned about safety Snapchat offers a Guide for Parents. [2]<\/a>\u00a0 The most important thing the SnapChat people and ConnectSafely say is \u00a0\u201cit\u2019s important to keep the lines of communication with your kids as open as possible and work together to figure out what\u2019s appropriate for them, in terms of safety, privacy, reputation and time management.\u201d<\/p>\n
