I can\u2019t avoid it any longer.\u00a0 I\u2019ve talked about it enough. \u00a0\u00a0The time for action has come!<\/p>\n

When I read \u201cBuilding Online Employability – a guide for academic departments\u201d by Longridge, Hooley and Staunton[1]<\/a> I was reminded of how important it is for me as a career development practitioner to be digitally career literate. <\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

What is digital career literacy?\u00a0 To quote the authors, \u201c\u2026an interlinked set of technical skills, career management and employability skills\u201d. They go on to say, \u201cDigital career literacy is already important to an individual\u2019s ability to pursue a career successfully, but it is getting more important.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I would agree. \u00a0\u00a0The use of social networking sites to either recruit or screen out potential employees has risen dramatically in the past couple of years. One survey indicates 75% of HR departments are required to screen candidates online and 70% of recruiters have rejected potential candidates based on information that surfaced online.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s involved in becoming digitally career literate?<\/p>\n

According to Longridge, Hooley and Staunton, \u201cThis encompasses much more than being able to protect one\u2019s reputation online and an ability to use social media packages. It also requires students to create content, collect and critically evaluate online information, adapt to on-going technological developments and develop an ability to build meaningful professional relationships online.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whew.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Where to start?<\/p>\n

In an earlier post[2]<\/a> I mentioned Hooley\u2019s 7 C\u2019s framework of skills one needs to effectively to build or manage a career in the online environment.\u00a0 The 7 C\u2019s are: changing, collecting, critiquing, connecting, communicating, creating and curating.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s handy for me that the authors have listed the 7 C\u2019s as learning outcomes (see p. 26).\u00a0 These learning outcomes give me a way to assess my skills levels and direct my learning. \u00a0\u00a0In reviewing these learning outcomes I can see I particularly need to work on connecting and curating.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What does that mean?\u00a0 Well, I need to spend dedicated time on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, Contact Point\u2026. \u00a0\u00a0All in the name of career development, of course (LOL). \u00a0And understanding how these social networking sites can be useful in terms of career. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Good thing I have a laptop so I can still enjoy the summer sun while I do this!<\/p>\n

It would be way more fun if I could pursue this goal with someone else.\u00a0\u00a0 If I lived closer to Toronto I would attend this session \u2013 \u201cSocial Media for Career Development Bootcamp: Your Complete \u201cHow to\u201d Guide\u201d.\u00a0 This is part of the Summer Skills Academy that CERIC is organizing in August 2013.\u00a0 Go to www.ceric.ca<\/a> for more information. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since I can\u2019t go to Toronto I will find an accountability partner [anyone out there care to join me?]and I will ask a couple of university students I know if they would like to work with me on this.\u00a0 That way I can share what I am learning and they can acquire much-needed career management skills.\u00a0 Sounds like a win-win to me.<\/p>\n
