Here\u2019s a cool use of technology!\u00a0 The Buddy App[1]<\/a> designed by Sidekick Studios in the UK.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like other apps I have talked about.\u00a0 This app is designed to be used by and with therapists (to use their language).\u00a0 \u201cIt is a digital tool to support therapy services.\u00a0 Clients use text messaging to keep a daily diary of what they are doing and how they are feeling, helping to spot and reinforce positive behaviours.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Currently, the Buddy App is being used by some of the National Health Service locations in the UK as well as other service providers.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what I understand about how it works.<\/p>\n

The therapist, with the client\u2019s consent, sets up the Buddy App system with the client\u2019s cell phone number and appointment date.\u00a0 Simple!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Everyday the client receives a text message from Buddy asking them to record their daily activities and rate their day.\u00a0 The text messages are personalized, easy to answer and nonintrusive.\u00a0 For example, \u201cHi Dawn.\u00a0 Buddy here.\u00a0 What did you do today?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This information is stored in their \u2018account\u2019 to which both the client and the therapist have access.<\/p>\n

The day before their session Buddy sends the client a reminder of the appointment time and encourages them to go into their account and review their information (days\u2019 activities and ratings).<\/p>\n

This is the really cool part – the client can then make notes and plan what they would like to talk about their session.\u00a0 These notes and session plans are saved in the system so prior to the session the therapist can also review the client\u2019s week went and see what they want to work on in session.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When it comes to goal setting it\u2019s possible for Buddy to send the client a text reminder for those behavioural changes they want to make. \u00a0They can choose the wording and the timing of the message.<\/p>\n

For example \u201cMorning Dawn.\u00a0 Buddy here.\u00a0 Why not go for a walk this morning?\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Buddy App uses text messaging as the medium for delivering this service because it\u2019s \u201ccheap, discreet, portable and fits into clients\u2019 lives\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n

As you might expect I made sure to review their privacy policy. The makers of Buddy App say they are \u201ccommitted to the privacy and confidentiality of any information entered into this program\u201d.\u00a0 They then clearly outline the processes and purposes for which an individual\u2019s personal and clinical data is used.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They do address the user\u2019s responsibility to protect their own privacy \u2013 \u201cIt is your responsibility to keep your password safe and to ensure that when using the program it cannot be accessed by other people without your consent.<\/p>\n

It is also your responsibility to ensure SMS messages are kept secure – we recommend the use of password locks on your mobile phone.\u201d\u00a0 Fair enough.<\/p>\n

Can we use it in Canada?\u00a0 They do point out if you want to use it in a country other than where their servers are located (UK) you need to be aware that the data would be transferred across international boundaries.\u00a0 So, hmmm.\u00a0 Need to think about the implications of that one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I like the simplicity and can see how useful this would be with some clients.\u00a0 Most of all I like the way in which clients can be more deeply engaged in the therapeutic process.\ufffd
