{"id":5493,"date":"2012-12-12T15:59:34","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T20:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=2638"},"modified":"2012-12-12T15:59:34","modified_gmt":"2012-12-12T20:59:34","slug":"social-media-and-ethics-oh-my","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/social-media-and-ethics-oh-my\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Media and Ethics \u2013 Oh My!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of posts ago I said I would be reading the \u201cEthical Framework for the Use of Scoial Media by Mental Health Professionals\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> from the Online Therapy Institute and reporting back to you what I learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One thing I learned right away is that I haven\u2019t given this whole topic quite as much thought as it deserves! I had participated in a workshop on Social Media for career practitioners and that experience prompted me to be much more intentional about my use of Social Media.\u00a0 But there was a lot I had not considered.\u00a0 Reading the Ethical Framework has led me to rethink my approach to Social Media.<\/p>\n<p>As it happens I am part of a group on LinkedIn where this topic was also being discussed.\u00a0 Tamara G. Suttle, a therapist who writes the blog \u201cAll things Private Practice\u201d, brought up the topic of Social Media in two recent blog posts.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> The discussion arose from a counsellor who wondered what to do about a former client \u2018following\u2019 her on Twitter.\u00a0 The ensuing discussion about boundaries between therapist and client was helpful in furthering my thinking about this topic.<\/p>\n<p>From these posts I found out about Dr. Keely Kolmes\u2019s work on Social Media for Clinicians.\u00a0 While she works in the US I think what she has to say is relevant.\u00a0 Dr. Kolmes offers a course in Social Media for Clinicians though you don\u2019t need to take the course to read the articles and view her private practice social media policy.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a> I will definitely be creating a Social Media Policy of my own [feeling a little sheepish that I haven\u2019t done it yet!].\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>DeeAnna Merz Nagel, of the Online Therapy Institute, has woven her own social media policy into her informed consent. <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0 In addition to social media issues she also mentions something I never even considered \u2013client use of \u201clocation-based services\u201d on their mobile phones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course everything that has been written about Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn also applies to Pinterest.\u00a0 Whew.\u00a0 So much technology to stay on top of!<\/p>\n<p>I like what one commenter said in response to Tamara G.
