It\u2019s been a week of focussing on the business aspects of online counselling.<\/p>\n

The issue of marketing arose when I was meeting with a colleague in the community who is an executive coach.\u00a0 She\u2019s just starting her own private practice and was asking me about my marketing.\u00a0 Where did I advertise?\u00a0 How did I handle marketing? What innovative and creative ways was I using to get the word out?<\/p>\n

I felt a little sheepish as I mumbled something that I hope sounded reasonable.\u00a0 I will admit that marketing is not my strong suit.\u00a0 I know I have to do it yet it\u2019s one of those things about which I tend to procrastinate.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Which isn\u2019t good because I am in private practice!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anyone else feel the same way?\u00a0 <\/p>\n

I left that conversation resolving to work on my marketing skills.<\/p>\n

Pricing of online counselling services came up when I was one of two guest speakers in a graduate Career Counselling course. One of the students asked whether there were \u201cset rates for online counselling fees or is it a free market\u201d? \u00a0I responded \u201cfree market\u201d as \u00a0I couldn\u2019t think of any organization that set a range of counselling fees for online services.<\/p>\n

When I got home I did some research to find out if there was a \u201crecommended fee\u201d for online counselling. \u00a0I found the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors has a \u201crecommended fee schedule\u201d for in-person and telephone counselling but doesn\u2019t cover email\/text-based counselling. \u00a0\u00a0As I did further research I found counsellors were charging anywhere from $25 – $220 for an email\/text-based counselling session.<\/p>\n

With such an incredible range how on earth does one decide what is a reasonable fee for online counselling services?<\/p>\n

In my search I came across this interesting article by Kevin Friery (a UK counsellor)\u00a0 written in 2003 with an update in 2011 on \u2018The Cost of Counselling\u2019.\u00a0 His comment (at the bottom of the article), \u201c\u2026 that we need to engage not only with price but with the psychological significance of money within a therapeutic relationship\u2026\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>I found quite intriguing.<\/p>\n

The other thing I found interesting was this \u2013 some counsellors charge different rates for text-based counselling than for in-person or video counselling.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t clear on precisely why these rates were different.\u00a0 It made me wonder about how text-based counselling is viewed.\u00a0 Does charging less suggest it is a lesser activity?\u00a0 Not as valuable as regular in-person counselling? Counselling lite?<\/p>\n

Or simply that the counsellor will spend less time on an email session than they would in-person?\u00a0 Or\u2026? \u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s have a conversation about this.\u00a0 Any comments, suggestions, thoughts are welcome.<\/p>\n
