{"id":5449,"date":"2012-06-26T09:58:53","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T13:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=2186"},"modified":"2015-07-03T15:52:37","modified_gmt":"2015-07-03T19:52:37","slug":"training-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/training-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Training Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent discussion thread on a LinkedIn group covered the issue of whether or not training in online counselling is necessary.\u00a0 Some feel no training is needed.\u00a0 \u201cAfter all\u201d, they say, \u201cI\u2019m a competent counsellor and I know how to use email and Skype.\u00a0 How hard can it be? What would I need to train for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working within one\u2019s scope of practice is an important ethical consideration.\u00a0 What does that mean in this context?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Online counselling is a developing field.\u00a0 Digital communication technologies are continuously evolving. There are technological and therapeutic aspects to online work no matter what your theoretical orientation or specialization.<\/p>\n<p>I believe we need training in clinical, ethical and legal issues.\u00a0 We need to learn the relationship skills we need to counsel online.\u00a0 We need to develop a high level of comfort with the technology.\u00a0 We need to be clear on confidentiality and privacy issues and how to address them.\u00a0 And we need to understand the legalities.\u00a0 Understanding legal issues is huge.\u00a0 The situation with respect to laws, jurisdiction, certification and insurance is also continuously evolving. (see CCPA\u2019s webpage section on E-counselling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/en\/ecounselling\/\">http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/en\/ecounselling\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>An interesting point brought up by one of the online counselling trainers in the UK is that clients behave differently online.\u00a0 In part, she was referring to disinhibition effects, how anonymity can lead to deeper disclosure.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s video and text and chat \u2013 each modality may bring out different behaviour.\u00a0 If clients behave differently online don\u2019t we too?\u00a0 What about <em>our <\/em>\u201conline persona\u201d? Training can provide an opportunity to understand our own online actions and reactions, and learn skills for managing our online behaviour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lots to learn!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Where can you find the training?
