{"id":5415,"date":"2012-03-06T15:42:58","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T20:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=1884"},"modified":"2015-07-03T16:01:10","modified_gmt":"2015-07-03T20:01:10","slug":"the-counsellor-will-see-you-now-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/the-counsellor-will-see-you-now-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Counsellor Will See You Now \u2013 Part One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Skype and other forms of videoconferencing have been around for quite a while.\u00a0 As I periodically surf the internet I have noticed an ever-increasing number of counsellors list Skype as an alternate method of delivering counselling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why do so many counsellors use Skype as opposed to any other videoconferencing software?\u00a0 Hmmm, could it be because it\u2019s free?\u00a0 And easy to use?\u00a0 But is it the best platform to use for every counselling situation?\u00a0 (see Brian Dosenberger\u2019s Feb. 10, 2012 blog post \u201cChoosing a Platform for Online Counselling\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Some counsellors only use this technology as an adjunct with clients they have met face-to-face and others use it exclusively \u2013 only ever \u201cmeeting\u201d their clients online. Which clients use it?\u00a0 Clients who have moved, are travelling, have caregiving responsibilities or disabilities that make it difficult to get to a counsellor\u2019s office, live in areas where resources are limited and who prefer talk therapy to writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Whether you use Skype or WebEx or some other software there are technicalities that need to be worked out and ethical questions to be answered if we want to create the best possible therapeutic environment online.<\/p>\n<p>On a practical technical level, when using videocounselling you need to consider:\u00a0 how tech \u2018savvy you are,\u00a0 maybe having to teach a client how to download software, webcam angles (do I want to be just a talking head?), lighting, background, setting, eliminating potential distractions, audio and video quality, potential to lose audio and\/or video completely, maintaining eye contact, presenting a professional appearance,\u00a0 to name a few.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course all these technical issues might make it seem as if you are constrained and can\u2019t be creative. Not so!\u00a0 A counsellor who uses Skype suggests to clients they keep \u201cpaper, pencils, crayons, a couple of puppets, and some pillows ready.
