{"id":5311,"date":"2011-06-20T15:03:32","date_gmt":"2011-06-20T19:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=611"},"modified":"2011-06-20T15:03:32","modified_gmt":"2011-06-20T19:03:32","slug":"no-presents-just-your-presence-required","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/no-presents-just-your-presence-required\/","title":{"rendered":"No Presents Just Your Presence Required"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been writing and thinking about how to create a sense of presence in online counselling sessions but I have not defined presence.\u00a0 I would like to explore the concept with you now.<\/p>\n<p>Defining presence is not easy.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s an abstract concept.\u00a0 Not easily quantifiable.\u00a0 Yet we know when we experience it.\u00a0 I recently heard someone describe a facilitator.\u00a0 They said, \u201cthey were \u2018warm\u2019 but it was a fake \u2018warm\u2019\u201d.\u00a0 I had to laugh.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in those courses, seminars, counselling sessions, etc. where presence was not present.\u00a0 Haven\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The dictionary definition of presence is \u201cthe state or fact of being present, attendance or company, immediate vicinity\u201d.\u00a0 Others (pulling from a variety of sources) define presence as availability, authenticity, engagement, connection.\u00a0 I could go all existential on you and talk about Buber\u2019s I-Thou relationships [remembering my university days] but I will refrain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I like this description of presence &#8211; \u201cIn presence, therapists are fully in the moment in a way that is with and for the client; the meeting of the two for the benefit of the one&#8230;.Therapeutic presence involves bringing one\u2019s whole self into the encounter with the client, being completely in the moment on a multiplicity of levels, physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually. Therapeutic presence is being grounded in one\u2019s self, while receptively taking in the fullness of the client\u2019s in the moment experience\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How can you make it happen?\u00a0 Part of the process is that \u201ctherapists listen deeply to their clients with all of their senses and perceptions.
