Your Phone Can Help."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A friend sent me a link to an article in the Globe and Mail titled \u201cRelief from anxiety may be as close as your BlackBerry.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/4yerbpg\">http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/4yerbpg<\/a> Researchers have been experimenting with computer based \u201cattention retraining\u201d as a means of reducing anxiety.\u00a0 The results so far have been quite interesting.\u00a0 What they are doing now is even more interesting \u2013 running a trial to see if this treatment can work using an iPhone, iPod Touch or Android smartphone (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.handheldtrainingstudy.com\/\">http:\/\/www.handheldtrainingstudy.com\/<\/a>).\u00a0 Yes, you heard me correctly.\u00a0 Use your <em>phone<\/em> to reduce your anxiety.\u00a0 Anywhere, anytime.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to do some further reading and research on this anxiety study.\u00a0 What I read indicated that these researchers are being conscientious and cautious [two thumbs up] which means it\u2019s not on the market yet.\u00a0 If the results using the smartphones are as positive as earlier results it could be a boon to anxiety sufferers.<\/p>\n<p>Spurred on by this research into the creation of a new therapy app I started to investigate smartphone apps designed for therapeutic use that are already on the market.<\/p>\n<p>In amongst all the games, entertainment, education, music, podcasts and business apps you will find hundreds of \u2018therapeutic\u2019 applications.\u00a0\u00a0 Apps topics include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, mood logs, sleep disorders, anxiety, stress management, worry, smoking cessation, positive thinking, affirmations, relationship problems, and mental health self-diagnosis.\u00a0 Ranging from the highly questionable [which I won\u2019t name!] to the highly reputable \u2013 for example, PTSD Coach (put out by the National Center for PTSD).<\/p>\n<p>I could see that some of the apps would be useful adjuncts to therapy.\u00a0 Sorting through which ones might actually have merit is not an easy task.\u00a0 However, I think applying an ethical framework would help.\u00a0 Do the creators of the app provide enough information to fit the criteria of \u201cinformed consent\u201d?\u00a0 Do they address the issues of confidentiality?\u00a0 What about the author\u2019s competence in this area?\u00a0 Have they addressed risk management?\u00a0 I could go on about beneficence, fidelity, nonmaleficence, autonomy, justice, and societal interest but I think you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>This quotation from Goss &amp; Anthony seems appropriate.\u00a0 \u201cThe question that remains to be addressed, of course, is of where these possibilities will take us next and what we all &#8211; practitioners and clients alike \u2013 should do about them once they are there\u201d.\u00a0 <a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime I had recommended an app to a client in need of anger management.\u00a0 Wait, what\u2019s that you said?\u00a0 Angry Birds is not an anger management app?\u00a0 Hmmm, guess I should take a closer look next time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Schell, MA, CCC is an affiliate of Therapy Online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therapyonline.ca\/\">www.therapyonline.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The opinions expressed in this blog post are personal.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref\">[1]<\/a> Goss, S. &amp; Anthony, K.
