{"id":4788,"date":"2014-05-27T15:30:44","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T19:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=3589"},"modified":"2014-05-27T15:30:44","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T19:30:44","slug":"developing-a-digital-identity-erikson-gets-an-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/developing-a-digital-identity-erikson-gets-an-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Developing a Digital Identity \u2013 Erikson Gets an Upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember my first encounter with a personal computer.\u00a0\u00a0 It was 1984 and the professor I was working for had acquired a Mac.\u00a0 One of my job requirements was learning how to use it.\u00a0\u00a0 At that point I had barely learned how to use an electronic typewriter and struggled with getting my assignments done on the university mainframe computer.<\/p>\n<p>My professor sat me down in front of the computer and asked me a very important question.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you most afraid will happen?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I knew my answer was silly but I couldn\u2019t help believing it might just be true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid it will explode and you will lose everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully he didn\u2019t laugh.\u00a0\u00a0 He assured me there would not be an explosion and then, patiently, led me step by step through the process of learning how to use the technology.<\/p>\n<p>At the recent International Association for Counselling Conference I attended a session by Jody Rempel on \u201cDeveloping an integrated digital sense of self\u201d.\u00a0 Jody Rempel and Dr. Paul Jerry of Athabasca University did something quite brilliant.\u00a0 They took Erikson\u2019s 8 stages of psychosocial development and applied it to our adoption of technology.<\/p>\n<p>As I reflected on the 8 stages I was reminded of that first encounter with a Mac.\u00a0 And with every technological change I have gone through since then!\u00a0 It goes across the generations too.\u00a0 Yesterday, a grade 9 student told me \u201cmy computer hates me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick summary of the stages as it relates to adopting technology.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Trust vs. Mistrust<br \/>\nCan I trust technology to work?<\/p>\n<p>Autonomy vs. Shame &amp; Doubt<br \/>\nCan I use this technology without help?<\/p>\n<p>Initiative vs. Guilt<br \/>\nIs it okay to use this technology as much as I would like to?<\/p>\n<p>Industry vs. Inferiority<br \/>\nCan I use technology to help me achieve my goals?<\/p>\n<p>Identity vs. Role confusion<br \/>\nWho am I and what can I be with this technology?<\/p>\n<p>Intimacy vs. Isolation<br \/>\nDo I like the role that technology plays in my life?<\/p>\n<p>Generativity vs. Stagnation<br \/>\nHow can I help other people develop their use of technology?<\/p>\n<p>Integrity vs. Despair<br \/>\nHave I used technology to better my life in a way congruent with my goals and values? <a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can see a number of ways in which this stage approach will be useful to me in terms of working with both clients and counsellors who are just starting out with online counselling.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s a handy framework.\u00a0 \u00a0Try it out for yourself and see what stage you are at!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dawn M.
