I confess.\u00a0 I have a Pinterest account.\u00a0 And I have spent most of my time on the site mindlessly surfing through the recipes, fashion and travel.\u00a0 What my dad used to call \u201cbubblegum for the mind\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

For those of you who may not know, Pinterest.com is a virtual pinboard where you can organize and share things you find on the web that are of interest to you.\u00a0\u00a0 Once you create an account you can start \u2018pinning\u2019. Basically, when you \u2018pin\u2019 something to the virtual pinboard the pin is a link to the website or page where you saw what interested you. The idea behind the site is that you will connect with others with similar interests. FYI – \u00a0you don\u2019t have to create an account to browse through the site.<\/p>\n

And it took me about 10 months of using Pinterest to clue into the idea that people just might be \u2018pinning\u2019 Online Counselling material.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I used a variety of search terms: online counselling, mental health & technology, online therapy. And \u2013 presto – I found pins.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s some of what I found – mental health clinics, individual online mental health practitioners, training courses in online counselling and coaching, books, articles, blogs, networking opportunities and therapeutic tools, to name a few. \u00a0\u00a0As I browsed through I realized much of this information I would not have found any other way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For example \u2013 SuperBetter by Jane McGonigal. \u00a0I found a pin for a TedTalk by and that led me to the site https:\/\/www.superbetter.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n

SuperBetter is an online social game designed to build personal resilience in the face of a serious challenge. I\u2019m going to take a closer look.<\/p>\n

This article about a study in New Zealand piqued my interest. http:\/\/www.interaksyon.com\/infotech\/computer-therapy-helps-young-out-of-depression-study<\/a><\/p>\n

This short interview with Julie Hanks, a U.S. therapist\u00a0 – especially her thoughts on what might be ahead for our profession in the next 10 years \u2013 was thought provoking.<\/p>\n

I found a blog written by a school counsellor whose aim is to offer suggestions for how others in the profession can utilize technology.\u00a0 Which led me to other resources as well. \u00a0Where was this blog when I needed it earlier this year?\u00a0 http:\/\/thecounselinggeek.blogspot.ca<\/a><\/p>\n

And I found tools, tips, counselling games and therapy worksheets.\u00a0 This is where Pinterest really shines as a resource.\u00a0 \u00a0I am going to explore this more in-depth.<\/p>\n

All of this also led me to wonder about professional boundaries and the use of social media.\u00a0 I bet there\u2019s a pin for that too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Let me look.<\/p>\n

Yup \u2013 there is \u2013 an Ethical Framework for the use of Social Media by Mental Health Professionals from the Online Therapy Institute<\/p>\n
