{"id":1453,"date":"2011-11-21T16:46:27","date_gmt":"2011-11-21T21:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccpa.scottbuckingham.ca\/blog\/?p=1453"},"modified":"2015-07-03T16:10:37","modified_gmt":"2015-07-03T20:10:37","slug":"an-idea-whose-time-has-come-part-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/fr\/an-idea-whose-time-has-come-part-two\/","title":{"rendered":"An Idea Whose Time Has Come \u2013 Part Two"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my last post I mentioned that colleges and universities in a variety of countries have adopted Online Counselling for their students.\u00a0 I surveyed fifteen post-secondary institutions that offer Online Counselling. I was curious about years of service, target group, student response, numbers served, issues that brought students to Online counselling versus in person counselling, challenges faced, counsellor training and best practices.\u00a0 I received eight responses. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> In this post I would like to share some of what they had to say.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the institutions surveyed had been offering Online Counselling since 2006, which seems like an adequate length of time to be able to offer insightful comments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>On Feedback <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cFeedback from students has been positive\u2026\u201d\u00a0 (same comment from 4 institutions)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cStudents have been very positive about the service.\u00a0 We asked for as much feedback as possible during the first pilot year and students indicated that it helped them in many ways, both in terms of succeeding on their courses and also in their private and personal lives\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>We find that the students find online counselling far less &#8216;odd&#8217; or &#8216;innovative&#8217; than we do &#8211; it is part of their world of communication and they do so many other things online, this hardly seems odd to them!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[I find this to be one of the most compelling comments made]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<em>Why students choose Online Counselling<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cMany students tell us that they find it easier to talk to us online about difficult issues such as sexual abuse and eating disorders than they would face to face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cHave found that a significant number of our online clients are those who feel unable to ask for face-to-face due to issues of shame, embarrassment, shyness etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWe have noticed that it is particularly popular with international students\u2026and with men &#8211;\u00a0groups who might perhaps be more reluctant to come for face to face counselling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201c\u2026statistics showing that compared\u00a0to the face to face service, more males\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0more international students access online,\u00a0 and presenting issues tend to be of a more intimate nature,\u00a0 generally regarding sexual behaviours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWhat has transpired is that 95% of enquiries come from students who could easily access the walk in face to face service anyway.\u00a0\u2026 those who say they are too busy, too shy, or want to test out their &#8220;normality&#8221;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Their recommended best practices?<\/em>\u00a0 (additionally supported by a literature review)<\/p>\n<p>Training in Online Counselling for Counsellors<\/p>\n<p>Regular Supervision with supervisor experienced in Online counselling<\/p>\n<p>Encrypted Email system or some other method of encryption (e.g. password protected Microsoft Word documents)<\/p>\n<p>Teach students how to preserve their own privacy<\/p>\n<p>Teach students how to make the most of Online counselling<\/p>\n<p>Clear, specific parameters for Online counselling (e.g. response times, expectations, how to express self in text)<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t assume it will work for everyone<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I\u2019ll ask it again.\u00a0 Is this an idea whose time has come?\u00a0 Is it time for Canadian post-secondary institutions to step up to the plate?\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The opinions expressed in this blogpost are personal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Schell, MA, CCC is an affiliate of Worldwide Therapy Online Inc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therapyonline.ca\/\">http:\/\/www.therapyonline.ca<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccpa-accp.ca\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> Responses from counsellors at universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my last post I mentioned that colleges and universities in a variety of countries have adopted Online Counselling for their students.\u00a0 I surveyed fifteen post-secondary institutions that offer Online Counselling.
