The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and its' chapters recognize the professional contributions of Canadians in the field of counselling by offering a number of different awards including:

Biennial CCPA Awards

An awards competition will be held each year: Four (4) categories one year and four (4) categories the following year, so that each award is presented biennially. 

Awards will be presented at the annual CCPA conference in the following categories: 

The CCPA Masters Thesis Award
The CCPA Research Article Award
The CCPA Professional Article Award
The CCPA Counselling Book Award

To nominate yourself or another CCPA member, please download and fill the Nomination form and mail it to the CCPA National office before December 15.

 

CCPA Student Awards

CCPA has dedicated a portion of it's SSHRC grant by providing two $500 awards in support of student members who wish to attend the CCPA Annual conference.  Student members from all CCPA regions are invited to apply, but must attend the conference to receive the award.

In support of Graduate Student research, Marsh, the CCPA Professional Liability Insurance Broker of Choice, has provided two $500 awards to student members demonstrating academic excellence. 

To nominate yourself or another CCPA student member for either of these awards, please forward the required information to the CCPA National office before December 15.

Special Awards

Candidates for the following distinguished special awards can be posed by any member of the Association but must have the recommendation of the Executive and the support of at least 2/3 of the Board of Directors. 

The CCPA Honorary Life Membership may be awarded to members who have made a considerable contribution to the aims and objectives of the Association.

The CCPA Professional Contribution Award may be awarded to a member in recognition of outstanding professional contribution to Counselling in Canada.

The Lorne Flavelle Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service may be awarded to a long-serving member in recognition of outstanding volunteer service to CCPA.

The Chris Campbell Memorial Study Grant (click here for more information)

The Dr. Lynda Younghusband Counselling Award has been established by Dr. Younghusband to promote the counselling profession and to improve access for students to the annual Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) conference. This award will be given to either a full-time or part-time graduate student enrolled in the Master of Education (Counselling Psychology) programme at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and who is attending the national CCPA conference to present a scholarly paper or poster. The recipient must meet the academic requirements for an award. It will be awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Education. Please contact the Memorial University of Newfoundland for more details on the award.

Chapter Student Awards

Dr. R. Vance Peavy Travel Bursary - CD Chapter

The Career Development Chapter offers a bursary of $300 toward attending the following national conferences: the annual CCPA (Canadian Counselling Association) conference, CANNEXUS or NATCON.

Applicants must be full-time students in graduate or other post-secondary programs in counselling, career counselling, or career development and have research interests in career development.

Preference will be given to students who have written a paper and have submitted a proposal to present at one of the above conferences.

Please submit your application electronically to the CD Chapter President (Kim.Hollihan@gnb.ca) and include the following in your application:

  • Your contact information
  • Program or degree description and proof of full-time status (e.g., letter from Department or supervisor)
  • Year of studies
  • Current research/practice interests (max. 300 words)
  • Title, date, and description of conference presentation (if applicable)

The deadline for submission of applications is the first Monday in December.

Applications will be ranked according to the above criteria, and a decision will be made by the Executive by the third Friday in December.  All applicants will be informed of the decision.

The winner will be expected to provide a summary of their presentation for inclusion in a Chapter Communiqué and/or to present their paper at the annual CDC meeting during the Canadian Counselling Association conference.

Doctoral Student Dissemination Award - CE Chapter

Purpose

The CE Chapter wishes to encourage CCPA members who are pursuing doctoral studies to consider a career as a counsellor educator. The CE Chapter Doctoral Student Dissemination Award is intended to assist these members achieve this goal. The award provides financial assistance to doctoral students travelling to the CCPA annual conference to present a conference paper.

Eligibility

Candidates must be CCPA members (regular or student) in good standing and enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited university. Candidates must also have a conference paper accepted for presentation at the either the annual CCPA conference.

Application Procedures

Candidates wishing to apply for this award must submit the following documents:

  1. 150-word abstract of the presentation
  2. Letter of acceptance from CCPA for the conference paper (if not available at application deadline, it must submitted as soon as it is received by the applicant).
  3. A short letter of application (max. 1 page) outlining (a) the candidates' career goals and (b) the importance of their research to the counselling profession in Canada.
  4. Curriculum vitae
  5. A letter of recommendation from a counsellor educator

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on their overall merit, including,

  1. the scientific merit of the research being presented;
  2. the significance of candidates' work to the counselling profession in Canada;
  3. the strength of candidates' interest and potential to pursue an academic career in counsellor education.

Value

The award is valued at $500. The award is presented to the winning candidate at the annual CE Chapter meeting held in conjunction with the annual CCPA conference.

A minimum of one award is given annually. A second award may be made if funds are available.

Bev Abbey Service Award - BC Chapter

In 2009, the BC Chapter of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association established the Bev Abbey Service Award to recognize and remember the late Bev Abbey, and to honour her generosity, selflessness, and many contributions to CCPA. The Bev Abbey Service Award is given annually to a BC graduate student in counselling psychology.
