National Capital Region Chapter

How to join

To join any of the CCPA Chapters, you first have to be a member of CCPA (any category of membership).

The annual fee is $10 and you can make your cheque payable to CCPA, explaining what chapter you want to join. You just have to forward it to the National Office, at any time during the year. You can also use the membership application or renewal form to indicate that you want to join the chapter and include it with your total amount due.

Professional Development Activities

2010-2011 Schedule of Educational Events, NCR Chapter – CCPA

Counsellors and those in related fields are warmly invited to attend the NCR Chapter – Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association 2010-2011 Professional Development Speaker Presentation Series as outlined below. Full and half-day workshops (advanced registration and registration fee) are also offered (see attached flyers below). 

TIME: Wednesday Evening, 5:30 to 7:30 PM (2 hours = 2 CEU credits per meeting)

Theme: “SURVIVE AND THRIVE: Today and Tomorrow”

Sept. 15 - FOCUS ON SELF-CARE: Cultivating Balance and Empowerment, Soti Grafanaki, PhD
Soti Grafanaki is a Professor of Counselling at Saint Paul University. She is a Certifying Coordinator and Trainer of the Focusing Institute of New York. Her presentation will concentrate on issues of self-care for counselling professionals and strategies for cultivating balance, reflective practice and professional wellbeing. (Interactive presentation with brief experiential exercise).

Oct. 20 - CONCEPTUALIZING AND TREATING ANXIETY DISORDERS, Dr. David Davies, PhD, C.Psych            
Dr. Davies is a Clinical Psychologist at the ROHCG Anxiety Disorders Program, Director of Training for the ROHCG Psychology Residency Program, and Clinical Professor at the University of Ottawa. The focus of his presentation will be on the conceptualization and treatment of clients with anxiety disorders.

Dec. 1 - SPECIAL SPEAKER PRESENTATION: AN UPDATE ON THE TRANSITIONAL COUNCIL OF THE COLLEGE OF REGISTERED PSYCHOTHERAPISTS AND REGISTERED MENTAL HEALTH THERAPISTS OF ONTARIO, Dr. Joyce Rowlands (See flyer)

Dec. 8 - MINDFUL SELF-CARE, Sandy Williams, MSW, RSW
Sandy is a registered social worker, leading Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programs for over a decade. She has participated in professional training with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Yoga Teacher Training with Glen Mifsud and holds a program certificate in “Mindfulness and Psychotherapy” with Ronald Siegel. In this presentation you will learn what mindfulness is and its relevance to self-care and stress reduction. You will also have an opportunity to practice a mindfulness meditation.

La résilience est votre meilleure alliée pour faire face à l’adversité et intégrer les épreuves de façon constructive. Découvrez les ingrédients et conditions essentiels vous permettant d’avoir une emprise sure votre vie afin de traverser les épreuves de l’existence et en ressortir grandit.

Feb. 12 - COALITION FUNDRAISER WORKSHOP: GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKPLACE Robyn Holland-Ayoub, BA, Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution (See flyer)                                                                

Feb. 23 - MALE INTIMACY AND DEALING WITH MEN IN THERAPY, Martin Rovers, PhD, C.Psych and René Vandenberg, MA, CCC
Perhaps most men are just not raised to be “intimate.” The research suggests that men need to feel appreciated through their work, sports, partners, and family, and probably in that order. Implications for therapy with men will be included. Martin Rovers and René Vandenberg are both marriage and family therapists in private practice.

Mar 9 - COMPASSION FATIGUE – VICARIOUS TRAUMA, Carole Alphonso, MA Psychology
As counsellors we cannot always protect ourselves as we listen to the traumatic events of clients. This presentation will identify warning signs of fatigue and how to protect ourselves against intolerable affects aroused by therapeutic work.

Apr. 9  - FULL DAY WORKSHOP: HEALING WITH NATURE: An Introduction to Ecopsychology and Ecotherapy, Andy Fisher, PhD (See flyer)

Apr. 20 - Introduction à la thérapie de couple centrée sur les émotions (EFT), Dr. Normand Gingras
Dr. Normand Gingras est diplômé en psychologie clinique de l’Université d’Ottawa depuis 2000, et est superviseur et formateur agrégé de l’International Centre for Excellence in Emotion Focus Therapy. Il pratique la thérapie de couple centrée sur les émotions (TCE) à son bureau du Ottawa Couple and Family Institute et est superviseur clinique en TCE auprès des étudiants au doctorat en psychologie clinique de l’Université d’Ottawa. Dr. Gingras offre la supervision et la formation TCE en français surtout, au Canada ainsi qu’à l’étranger.

May 11 - COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING, Michael Hone, MEd., CCC
Michael Hone is the Associate Executive Director of Crossroads Children’s Centre and a member of the Advisory Council of Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He has worked approximately 20 years in the children’s mental health sector in the Ottawa area. This presentation will demonstrate how the Collaborative Problem Solving model has been applied to children with a wide range of social, emotional, and behavioural challenges and in a wide range of settings: families, schools, and restrictive therapeutic facilities.
