RE: signing up for the E-group for the Aboriginal Circle Chapter E-Group

Ka’lhwhalahap/Hello too all of you;

We are happy to announce that the E-Group for the "Aboriginal Circle Chapter" of CCPA is now fully operational, and will now serve as a dialogue forum for two-way communication about Aboriginal Circle Chapter business and events.

It can also be used for discussing topics, issues and concerns relating to Aboriginal counsellors or clients -- as well as providing a webpage where useful relevant documents provided by members (articles, theses, event announcements, etc) can be viewed online or downloaded.

Our Chapter is for either Aboriginal counsellors -- or non-Aboriginal counsellors, students, educators, researchers, etc., who are already working with (or interested in working with) Aboriginal clients of any age.  All members must be members of the Canadian Counselling Association in good standing. Being part of this E-Group is one of the benefits of membership in this Chapter...

However, becoming a member of the E-Group is not automatic: This service is free, but you must sign up for it through the Aboriginal Circle Chapter president or designate. Your name must be on our membership list.  Once you are signed up, then you will receive all messages sent by other E-Group members, and be able to send responses that the others will all see.  (Messages are automatically forwarded into your own email account and any response you write back, will be received by everyone else in the group -- including you!)

News:

  • The first cohort of the M.Ed. for Counselling in Aboriginal Communities has begun at the University of Victoria. The class consists of approximately 20 students who will complete a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology thru part-time studies over a three year period.
  • The Native Mental Health Association of Canada (NMHAC) met September 25-28th in Charlottetown, PEI. NMHAC is “is a national not-for-profit association that is governed and managed by Aboriginal leaders and exists to improve the lives of Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations by addressing healing, wellness, and other mental health challenges. It is a voluntary mental health association with membership open to all Canadians who are committed to healing, wellness and related mental health challenges…”
    • “The NMHAC grew out of the Canadian Psychiatric Association Section on Native Mental Health, which was formed in 1975.  Led by the late Clare Brant, Canada's first Indigenous psychiatrist, it was incorporated on March 12, 1990…” (NMHAC website www.nmhac.ca)
  • Healing Our Spirit Worldwide Conference – the 6th Gathering – Sept 3rd – 10th 2010, Honolulu, Hawaii “is a cultural celebration and international Indigenous conference that will focus on successes, best practices and common issues in health, healing and addictions within indigenous populations. www.papaolalokahi.org.

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE "Aboriginal Circle Chapter" E-GROUP:

1) Read the rules that members are expected to follow (below), and if you are in agreement with all terms listed there, then there are just two more easy steps (done just once!):

2)   Send a blank e-mail message to:

Aboriginal_Circle_Chapter_CCA-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

 -- and --

3)  ALSO send a second e-mail message directly to the E-Group Manager at:

Aboriginal_Circle_Chapter@phototherapy-centre.com

In this second message please put: your name, your email address, your phone number, your mailing address, and your CCPA Membership status.  Once all is confirmed you will begin receiving messages and can send your own. The E-group manager is Judy Weiser who helped to develop the E-group site. Thank you, Judy.

That's it! .....       Unless you want to be able to read the messages directly online in what is called "Daily or Weekly Digest" format (instead of getting individual messages; this is helpful if you are travelling without your computer) --

or to view past messages in the Archive --  or to access items* that members have shared online, by uploading them to the E-Group's "Members-Only" webpage" (*for example, articles, theses and dissertations written by Indigenous counselors or others, for the benefit of Indigenous and non-Indigenous counselors, etc)....

For all these additional functions, you will need to do one more step:                      sign-up to be a member of Yahoo Groups itself!

To do this you will need to choose a password and a "User ID" that will appear to end in "@yahoo.com" but please note that this does not require that you ever actually use it at any time -- you only use this once, in order to be able to actively go into their webpage for our E-Group.

This is optional, of course, but we do recommend it so that you can access all the other options --

so to do this, go to:

http:groups.yahoo.com (note that there is no "www" part to this web address) and then follow the steps.  If you need assistance doing this, our E-Group Manager would be glad to help.

• If you have any questions, or want more information, please feel free to contact the E-Group Manager of this list, at address #3 above.

PLEASE NOTE: The content that you post on forum is YOUR responsibility. This is an un-moderated group and the Manager only intervenes if there has been some kind of infringement. You must make sure not to violate copyright rules, nor post other people's words without their consent).

*Please take the time now to read the rest of the Guidelines listed on the next page ("Standard E-Group Rules and Etiquette"), because all members will be expected to follow them.

Thank you, and we hope to see you in the E-Group soon!
